If REDD is to work, developing countries must have capacity to report their Greenhouse Gas Inventories, following the IPCC guidelines. As shown in a side event, organized by the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, the vast majority of countries do not have this capacity. This conclusion reflects the findings of FAO’s global forest resources assessment. Furthermore, to date the support to countries is still limited. The side event announced the evolving collaboration between key institutions, the EPA of US, GTZ of Germany, IPCC and UN-REDD to help build national capacities for reporting. The event also called for allocation for funds to scale up the capacity building effort as a critical component in preparing for REDD.
